Scholar & Student Ambassador, Yong shares her experiences of learning and thriving in SIM 

Studying abroad may initially seem daunting, but with determination, preparation, and a strong passion, it becomes an attainable goal. Meet Nong Yong Kunyada Dechajaroensiri, an international student from Thailand and a scholar pursuing the Diploma in Management Studies with Singapore Institute of Management.  

Transitioning to studying abroad unleashed a world of experiences for Yong. From grappling with newfound independence to forging connections with peers from diverse backgrounds, every challenge was an opportunity to break out of her comfort zone. Battling homesickness, Yong found solace in social engagements and extracurricular activities available on campus, as there are 80 student clubs and societies within SIM. 

Academically, SIM offered rigorous yet rewarding coursework in fields like business studies. With experienced teaching faculty paving the way, Yong embraced challenging subjects, finding joy in practical learning that can be applicable in real-life business settings.  

Beyond Academics – Yong’s adventure in the iCare Club & The Ambassador Programme 

Beyond academics, SIM’s vibrant campus life provided ample opportunities for personal development and community engagement. Yong volunteers through the iCare club, which offers community service and volunteer work opportunities to students, contributing to society and also growing her soft skills. In addition, Yong is also a student ambassador for SIM. She is involved in various activities and actively engages with prospective students to answer inquiries about studying abroad with SIM. Tips for applying scholarship 

As a successful scholar, Yong shares 3 things you have to do to maximize your chances of obtaining a scholarship:  

  1. Achieve good academic results, but know that it is not everything 
  1. Participate actively in extracurricular activities and put that in your portfolio 
  1. Write a compelling Statement of Purpose showcasing who you are and where your passion lies 

Yong’s favorite hangout 

Yong listed some of the facilities that she loves to utilize in SIM, such as sports facilities including the gym, basketball court, and rock climbing wall. She also introduced the wellness center, where she participates in activities with her various friends from different countries. “Being in SIM is never boring!” said Yong. 

Reflecting on her experience, Yong emphasizes the warmth and inclusivity of the SIM community, dispelling concerns about forging connections in a new environment. She encourages prospective students to embrace preparation, pursue their passions, and embark on the transformative journey of studying abroad.
