“When there are so many programmes available, how do you know which one to choose? How can you be sure? What if I don’t like it?” These are the questions I get asked all the time, whenever I tell anyone back home that I’m studying in Singapore at SIM GE.
And I get it. It wasn’t easy for me too when I had to decide which course would give the best returns on my parents’ hard-earned investment. So to help other aspiring international students along, these are the 5 tips I often share with anyone who asks.
- Know what gets you excited
Which subjects do you love and are good at? What are you passionate about? When you are truly interested in the course you’re studying, you will naturally enjoy it more and be driven to deepen your learning. Knowing your preferred learning style can also help you perform to the best of your abilities. - Research!
Now that you have a better idea of your interests, study the details of programmes that may suit you. Pay attention to important facts, for example: are they examination-based? Do they have group assignments? What is the university’s rankings and course duration? If you’re not sure where to start, check out the details of over 80 programmes offered by SIM GE’s partner universities. - Talk to the people that matter
Studying overseas is a huge step for your future. So take your time to know everything you need to make an informed decision. If you are able to, I strongly recommend that you attend Open Houses. Speak to faculty members and staff about the institution and programmes available – it’s the best way to get first-hand information. I even read success stories from alumni to see where their studies have taken them. - Do your sums
For most families, the cost of living and studying overseas are astronomical. Do your sums and work out what’s possible. You may also check out the bond-free scholarships that SIM GE offers to international students with excellent grades or exemplary achievements in sports and arts. - Keep in mind career prospects and emerging job trends
Perhaps this is the most important tip of all since having a degree will most certainly boost your employment prospects. In fact, SIM GE’s overall Employment Rate of 82.8%* is one of the reasons why I chose to study at SIM. It’s never too early to plan your career path so stay informed on emerging job trends. Know what skills will be relevant in the future job market.
Still unsure? Here are more tips from SIM GE for international students.
Till the next post my friends!
